SUMMARY

Education Above All (EAA) has made significant progress in its mission to provide education to every person in need. During 2022, EAA has implemented or supported several programs and initiatives to support the education of the most marginalized children and youth, including people with disabilities and refugees.

ENROLMENTS

In 2022, EAA's project partners enrolled an impressive 610,978 out-of-school children (OOSC) through 35 projects in 36 countries, bringing the total enrolments to date to an impressive 11,262,609 since 2012.

TRACE

EAA launched TRACE, a data portal that collects, visualizes, and analyzes data on attacks on education as a global public good. This initiative enables a better understanding of the challenges faced by education systems worldwide.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

EAA, in collaboration with the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), trained and mobilized over 70,000 marginalized and refugee grassroots youth in South Sudan and Uganda. These programs equipped them with essential knowledge and skills for human rights advocacy, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

SCHOLARSHIPS

By the end of 2022, EAA had committed 2,094 scholarships and awarded 632 scholarships during the year. These scholarships unlock educational opportunities for deserving individuals.

QATAR AFGHAN SCHOLARSHIP PPROJECT (QASP)

EAA and supporting partners launched QASP to support Afghan refugee’s access to higher education. This initiative welcomed 250 Afghan students to colleges and universities in the United States for the 2022-2023 academic year.

TOGETHER PROJECT

EAA's Together Project assists thousands of children in Qatar. In 2022, three new Assalam Schools were initiated, reaching a total of five schools. The project surpassed enrollment targets, accommodating 2,573 children of 32 nationalities.

IFERB

EAA's Internet Free Education Resource Bank (IFERB) reached over 827,000 learners in more than 175 countries. Implemented in 15 countries, IFERB aimed to improve the quality of learning and access to education.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS

EAA formed partnerships with prominent organizations such as the Asian Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and UNICEF. These partnerships focus on educating the hardest-to-reach children in five countries, expanding the reach of EAA's impact.

SCORING 4 THE GOALS CAMPAIGN

EAA's Scoring 4 the Goals campaign and the SDG Pavilion during the Qatar FIFA World Cup engaged high-level guests and VVIPs in taking action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

TRANSFORMING EDUCATION SUMMIT

EAA influenced the agenda of the Transforming Education Summit to discuss debt swaps in education as an innovative financing instrument. This contribution sparked discussions on alternative funding models.

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and the Education Above All Foundation have teamed up to design a collection of versatile and eco-friendly modular tents.

These innovative structures serve as vital hubs, offering education, healthcare, and temporary refuge to displaced communities in Syria, Turkey, and Yemen. The tents are easily transportable, allowing for effortless assembly, disassembly, and expansion, while incorporating recyclable materials for a sustainable future.

  • Private Sector Partnerships (PSP)achieved its 2022 target by securing new partners and maintaining relationships with existing ones.
  • PSP launched three fundraising campaigns to raise funds for Educational Above All (EAA) programs and awareness within Qatar's population and online.
  • PSP successfully managed existing partnerships with resource mobilization partners for 2022 with 100% retention of partners.
  • PSP launched a Hermes limited edition scarf dedicated to EAA along with a card introducing EAA and distributed to Hermes' customers.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS

  • Framework Agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Q3 2022 to reach to around 500,000 out-of-school children and provide jobs for 500,000 in Africa.
  • First GPE Multiplier Grant in Q2 2022 for a joint EAA-IsDB/ISFD project in Nigeria to provide quality education for 100,000 out-of-school children in Kaduna State.
  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded a grant in Q3 2022 to Innovation Development for delivering holistic and practical learning for forced migrants, internally displaced persons, and refugees.

FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGNS HIGHLIGHTS

  • PSP organized a "Back to School" campaign across Doha and participated in the Doha Jewelry and Watches Exhibition (DJWE2022).
  • PSP organized a Ramadan campaign and the active participation of EAA resource partners on the International Day to Protect Education from Attack day by providing visibility and awareness to this day using partners' media assets and resources (ELAN Media Out of Home Assets, Malls, Msherieb Downtown Doha, Torch Hotel, Aspire Zone, Al Raya and Al Sharq newspapers, Hotels, Restaurants and Cafes, Schools, and many others).
  • EAA was a strategic partner for Qatar Sustainability Week 2022, and through its resources, private sector partners participated in Sustainability Week activities like sustainability booths in supermarkets, encouragement of recycling, energy savings, no plastic bag usage during this week, beach cleaning, and tree planting initiatives.
  • PSP fulfilled the EAA pledge of being part of Qatar's one million trees pledge and planting one tree for every Assalam School.



STAKEHOLDERS

Stakeholder engagement holds immense importance for EAA, as it allows us to grasp the needs and priorities of our beneficiaries, establish potential partnerships, build trust, measure impact, and ensure accountability and transparency.

To strengthen our thought leadership, EAA has undertaken various initiatives. These include joining the Digital Transformation Collaborative (DTC) of the Global Education Coalition, collaborating with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) to enhance UN SDG indicators, serving on the Global Partnership for Education's Board of Directors' Performance, Impact, and Learning Committee (PILC), and participating in the G-7 working group on investments in girls' education.

EAA has also formed partnerships, conducted webinars and conferences, and launched fundraising campaigns, all to advance our mission and promote quality and inclusive education.

Al FAKHOORA

    Partnerships for Access

  • 2 new partnerships were launched by Al Fakhoora (AF) in September 2022. The Qatar Scholarship Afghan Programme (QSAP) with the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Afghan Future Fund, and the QS-EAA/Sciences Po partnership. These partnerships provide higher education opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers in the USA and France.

QSAP

  • 250 students from Afghanistan gain access to higher education at leading US universities. The QS-EAA/Sciences Po partnership offers the Professional Certificate for Young Refugees, empowering refugees and asylum seekers who have had their education interrupted to access opportunities for further advancement.

Scholarship Commitment

  • 632 scholarships were awarded by Al Fakhoora in 2022 which expanded the Qatar-based scholarship program for marginalized expatriate youth. As of the end of 2022, Al Fakhoora has committed 2,094 scholarships.

Graduation Achievements

  • 420 students graduated from the Al Fakhoora Scholarship and Empowerment program in Gaza, reaching a total of 930. Al Fakhoora Scholarship for Palestinian and Syrian Refugees proudly graduated 5,733 students.

  • Throughout 2022, Al Fakhoora gave beneficiaries a voice through the Qatar Connection component. Students engaged in local, regional, and global events, becoming changemakers for peace and prosperity in their communities and nations.

Producing Knowledge Products

  • Al Fakhoora focused on sustainability, creating toolkits for the Al Fakhoora Scholarship and Empowerment program in Gaza. Toolkits cover unique scholarship components like Selection 4 Success, Student Support Services, Psychosocial Support, Internships, and E-Work. One toolkit was accepted by UNESCO to be part of their Open Knowledge Product.

Online Master Classes

  • To achieve scalability, Al Fakhoora produced online Master Classes on Teachables. With 8 modules (40 classes), these classes focus on civic engagement and will be available to all beneficiaries, and integrated under the Qatar Connection component of scholarships.

IFERB: Unleashing Learning Potential Beyond COVID-19

  • Innovation Development's (ID) flagship solution, The Internet Free Education Resource Bank (IFERB), has soared beyond the confines of the COVID-19 context.
  • In its second set of pilot programs, ID reached over 827,000 learners in 175+ countries, implementing it successfully in 15 countries to enhance learning quality and accessibility.
  • The program witnessed a remarkable 54% growth, with partners reporting 100% satisfaction and an impressive completion rate of 89% in 2022.

Rapid Response: Empowering Ukrainian Crisis Refugees

  • In the face of the Ukrainian crisis, ID swiftly designed and implemented a rapid response solution.
  • The Ukraine EiE content suite, including project-based learning resources and translated bedtime stories, supported refugees in integrating with their host country.
  • This timely initiative required no additional resources and was launched just two months after the crisis began.

Technical Education Leaders

  • Education Above All (EAA) through its Innovation Development has emerged as a global leader in technical education. The prestigious World Bank sought ID as a technical partner, entrusting it to develop a compelling story and educational content for the Afghan context under their award-winning Evoke program. Additionally, ID collaborated with five partners as a technical education consultant for IFERB, extending support without financial assistance. Moreover, ID secured co-funding from the Gates Foundation for an innovative livelihood solution.

Recognized Publications

  • Groundbreaking initiatives have gained recognition in esteemed publications such as OECD, Harvard, World Bank, and the HundrED Report: How Learning Continued During COVID.
  • Its work has also been featured in the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) Journal of Education in Emergencies and CNN's article "How children in India are learning math and science through football."

  • EAA’s Innovation Development department has garnered numerous accolades, including the WISE Award 2022, HundrED Global Catalog for 2023, HundrED Rapid Response Award, Wharton Reimagine Education Award for Access and Equity 2022, and is a GESS Award Finalist.

Empowering Education Content

  • EAA’s ID's dedicated team developed over 5500+ pages of in-house education content for the IFERB. Additionally, they launched Arabic Storyweaver, featuring a collection of 200+ Arabic storybooks.

  • The 4th Observance of this day took place at the UNESCO Head Quarters in Paris.
  • It brought global visibility to the cause and encompassed the three pillars of the Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict (PEIC) Theory of Change: Data, global advocacy, and cultural content.
  • Young people from the Educational Above All - United Nations Human Rights (EAA-OHCHR) Youth Advisory Board actively participated in the advocacy.

Youth Advocates (YAs) Engaged

  • Youth Advocates played an integral role in various EAA activities, including global discourse, grassroots workshops, and digital initiatives.
  • They participated in significant events such as the Doha Forum 2022, #UniteToProtect's Global Youth Rally, the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA), Education Under Attack report launch, UNESCO's Pre-Summit, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and Transforming Education Summit (TES) in September 2022.

OHCHR Project

  • PEIC made progress on the United Nations Human Rights (OHCHR) project, jointly led by Education Above All (EAA), Siltech, and OHCHR.

However, there was overspending on the programmatic budget, which is indicative of the high-quality technical partnerships that were established and for which deliverables were completed on time.

The Professional Services budget was not fully ulitilised though and this will be offset with the development of the EAA-OHCHR Microsite that is being requested for a high-profile youth advocacy project.

  • The Together Project team actively collaborates with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to ensure every child in Qatar has access to education, presenting a comprehensive educational strategy.
  • The project collaborated with the University of Doha for Science and Technology to develop the BTEC module at the Third and Fourth Assalam Schools to provide technical and vocational education to students.
  • The project also worked with Qatar Foundation and Street Child United to establish a Qatar Football team that participated in the Street Child World Cup to advocate for access to education and showcase the success of Assalam Schools through school visits.

  • The project team is working closely with multiple MOEHE departments and committees to inform the findings and recommendations identified by EAA to address the out-of-school children in Qatar and provide feedback to MOEHE through its reports to ensure sustainable practices.
  • EAA reports and proposes methods as per international best practices to address the barriers faced by out-of-school children (OOSC), such as the implementation of the Academic Recovery and Remediation program at Third and Fourth Assalam Schools and recommends it as a general practice across the system to cater to educational gaps in children's education.
  • The project has developed two additional concept notes for the Sixth and Seventh Assalam Schools to upscale the operation and provide access to the OOSC from the primary age segment and children with special needs, given the increased need identified through Assalam School's data gathering.

The total approved program cost budget for the fiscal year 2022 for the Together Project was QAR 4,900,000 and the Project successfully disbursed *100% of it.

4th Observance of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack

The International Day to Protect Education from Attack took place, organized by UNESCO, UNICEF, the Office of the Special Representative of UNSG for Children and Armed Conflict, Education Above All Foundation, and the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to UNESCO. The event focused on 'Act Now to Protect Education from Attack' and featured a series of events such as a High-Level Panel and expert discussions on the need for effective implementation of normative mechanisms to ensure the continuity of education at all times, guarantee the protection of students, schools and educational personnel from attack, strengthen accountability for perpetrators and provide justice to affected populations.

Scoring 4 the Goals

EAA conducted the Scoring 4 the Goals campaign to support the Sustainable Development Goals affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises. The campaign included various activations with partners, and fans at home were able to show their support as well through a digital campaign.

The Education Above All Foundation (EAA), along with other organizations, has launched several advocacy and campaign initiatives to promote education and peace globally.

High-Level Global Conference on Youth-Inclusive Peace Processes

In the initiative of "Youth and Peace Processes," EAA co-organized a virtual High-Level Global Conference that brought together over 130 young peacebuilders from 77 countries. The conference aimed to explore opportunities and build partnerships to support youth-led and inclusive peace efforts, resulting in a joint statement by government representatives emphasizing the accelerated implementation of the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda.

Transforming Education Summit

The United Nations Transforming Education Summit (TES) convened by the UN Secretary-General brought together global leaders, educators, and youth to address the global crisis in education that had been exacerbated by the pandemic. Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and EAA committed USD1.6 million to support the summit's Thematic Action Tracks, which focused on critical topics for achieving SDG 4. This summit aimed to prioritize education in political agendas, secure commitments to recover from pandemic losses, and ignite a global movement for educational transformation.

National Consultation for Transforming Education Summit

In preparation for TES, the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and Education Above All Foundation held a series of national consultations in Qatar. The country has made significant contributions to global education through EAA Foundation.

Side event on Financial Innovation

During TES, EAA organized a side event on "Financial Innovation – Expanding the Fiscal Space for Education: Financing Learning Recovery" to discuss innovative ways of creating additional fiscal space for quality education.
